Camping with family - Top 10 errors

Camping with family - Top 10 errors

Camping with family, the ability to communicate with nature, to mend ties with relatives and share lasting memories! What could go wrong? Many things, actually. The lack of planning and preparation can turn a dream vacation into a nightmare. We talked to Ed Jager, director of visitor satisfaction, Parks Canada to determine camping 10 errors to avoid.

Error #1 : Do not test your new equipment

Picture this: in anticipation of camping with family, you bought a portable gas grill. You want to turn it on to feed your starving children when you realize, too late, it's not working. Oh oh!

Failure to test the new equipment is one of the most regrettable mistakes campers do, said Jager. "You have to make sure you know how to use all your camping gear, he advises. Mount the new tent in the garden, learn how the barbecue and enter the new sleeping bag to make sure it is large enough, before taking the road. "

Error #2 : Keep the toiletries in the tent

Most campers know that keeping food in the tent is an invitation to the 4 feet neighbors. However, other products may also encourage them to enter. "People forget that items such as toothpaste, insect repellents and soap attract animals," said Jager. Keep all personal care products in the car or in the same airtight bag that you use for your food.

Error #3 : Arrive at night

It can be frustrating to set up your camp in the dark, especially in an unknown location. Plan to arrive during the day to give everyone a chance to find the toilet and get used to the places. Of course, arriving at night is sometimes unavoidable. In this case, Jager suggests using headlamps to illuminate your hands (and release them) during assembly of the equipment.

Error #4 : Underestimating the weather

The funny thing with the weather is that it never seems to listen to weather reports. "You listen to the weather forecast, you hear that he will be fine and you leave the raincoat at home. Then it rains for two days and you're stuck, "warns Jager.

Bring rain gear for the whole family and plan activities for rainy days so that everyone stays in good spirits until the storm passes. And do not forget the extra pairs of socks.

Error #5 : Not having a repair kit

Nothing ruins a camping trip as a tent flowing. Fortunately, you took your set of practical repair, is not it?

Here is what you need:

- Additional rope
- Metallic sheaths to strengthen twisted tent pegs
- Sewing kit to sew tears
- Tape highly resistant and waterproof (duct tape)
- Lace (in case yours let go)

Error #6 : Skimping on food

Take just enough food for the journey time could leave you in a difficult situation for the unexpected. For example: "Say you go hiking and someone twists the ankle. You might have to stay a day longer, "warned Jager. You also need a plan B in case someone would burn pancakes or sausage escape the fire.

Take the equivalent of an extra day's meals and snacks and a reserve of energy bars, just in case.

Error #7 : Forget the first aid kit

A well-stocked first aid kit care could prevent the trip ended sadly in the emergency room. Check the contents of your kit, replace the expired medications and make sure to have everything you might need.

Error #8 : Neglecting the campsite

It is wonderful to observe animals in their natural habitat, but less nice to surprise them in full feast in your cooler. Leave hang food and garbage attracts unwanted visitors and it's bad for everyone. Jager said: "It is not healthy for the animals to eat this food. "And that could create problems to the next campers, because animals will get used to pick up their food at the campsite.

To avoid this problem, keep food and garbage in the car or in a waterproof bag, hanging from a pole or a tree.

Error #9 : Arrive without reservation

You probably would not stay in a hotel without reservation, hoping to get the room of your choice. This applies to campsites, especially in summer. "Without reservation, you may not get the location you want," said Jager. Avoid disappointment by booking your place well in advance. Parks Canada, Sépaq and many other places where there are campgrounds allow you to make online reservations.

Error #10 : Seeing only obstacles

No doubt, a well-planned camping trip requires some work. But being too busy with tasks could deprive you of pleasure. "Enjoy the environment," said Jager. "We live in a world where our daily lives are invaded by stress. Camping is an opportunity to get out. "Take pleasure in tasks such as heating water to wash dishes and prepare the fire to make a meal, make your family camping trip even more enjoyable.
